The University of Houston–Victoria was founded in 1971 and remains there today. The city's advantageous proximity to Gulf Coast ports, the larger cities of San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi, and prosperous industries in agriculture and petrochemicals solidified its prominence. By the turn of the 20th century, Victoria was experiencing rapid population growth thanks to its position as a regional trade center. ĭuring the mid-19th century, the city developed a large population of European immigrants, particularly Germans. In 1840, a Comanche raid on nearby Linnville killed many residents of the town. After Santa Anna was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto, the town's Mexican residents were driven out by Anglo settlers, who renamed it Victoria. However, after James Fannin was defeated by the Mexican army at the Battle of Coleto, the town was occupied by Mexican forces. ĭuring the Texas Revolution, Guadalupe Victoria contributed soldiers and supplies to pro-revolutionary forces. By 1834, the town had a population of approximately 300. Victoria was initially part of De León's Colony, which had been founded that same year.

The Texas Zoo is one of only a few in the nation chosen by the U.S. More than 200 animals representing 90 species are displayed in their natural habitat set between native pecan trees and indigenous fauna. It is the world’s only zoo dedicated exclusively to Texas Wildlife. One of the many attractions in the city is the Texas Zoo in Riverside Park. Victoria Regional Airport offers commuter service to Houston and serves as a base for numerous private aircraft. The Gulf Coast Intercoastal Waterway runs south of Seadrift to a point within six miles of the city of Victoria. Cultural activities are a vital component to the community, including the Victoria Symphony, the Victoria Community Theater, the Victoria Civic Chorus, and the Children’s Choir.Īcres of parkland, include three golf courses and an abundance of playgrounds and ball parks are available for fun and relaxation. The area offers beautiful historic Victorian homes and structures which can be found throughout the city. Temperatures range from lows in the mid to low 30’s in winter to highs in the mid 90’s to 100’s during the summer. Minerals include oil, gas, sand and gravel. Soils in the county range from sandy loam to clay and alluvial types. It is also linked to the Gulf Coast through Lavaca Bay at its southeast corner. The physical features of this Texas upper coastal county have a rolling terrain intersected by many streams, including the Guadalupe and San Antonio Rivers. Victoria County has also become a retail center for the region in every area of commerce.
The county has a significant health care industry with two large hospitals, specialized treatment and emergency care clinics, and nursing homes. It also has strong oil and gas industry, manufacturing facilities, petrochemical plants, agri-business, and tourism base. The county continues to support its traditional agricultural foundation with an average annual county farm income of $35 to $55 million derived mainly from beef cattle, corn, cotton, sorghum, soybeans and rice. Located roughly in the middle of a triangle within San Antonio, Houston and Corpus Christi, Victoria is a growing area with a diversified economy and the foundation for significant expansion in coming years. Victoria County makes up the heart of the Golden Crescent, also known as the “Crossroads” and is home to the areas largest city, Victoria, the county seat.
